College Entrance Exams
Some colleges, universities, and other programs (for example NCAA, ROTC) may require either the SAT or ACT exam as part of their college entrance requirements and/or merit scholarship consideration, but most* colleges and universities have moved to Test Optional admissions. Juniors primarily take the exams in the winter and spring; however, some seniors who want to improve their scores may choose to take them in the fall of senior year. SAT and ACT exams are no longer required for any of the Oregon Public Universities – OSU, UO, PSU, WOU, OIT, SOU and EOU. *Note: Many colleges and universities are eliminating the SAT or ACT requirement. Check each college or university admission requirements online, as well as this list of over 1700 test-optional colleges and universities.
Preliminary SAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test)
For Juniors only: The Preliminary SAT (PSAT) is a practice test for the SAT; it is also used to determine eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship Program, National Achievement Scholarship Program, Hispanic Recognition Program, and other scholarships and recognition programs listed here. It utilizes junior year (11th grade) PSAT exam scores only. The next PSAT exam at CHS will take place in October 2022. Look for an email in early September with more details.
